Four Achievements from the OCRI Showcased at the 2026 World Youth Development Forum
On June 15, the 2026 World Youth Development Forum opened in Wuhan. A concurrent exhibition showcasing scientific and technological achievements of young and mid-career researchers was held during the forum. Four representative achievements from the Oil Crops Research Institute (OCRI) of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS)—plant-derived methyl selenium tablets, a synergistic ARC bio-inoculant for quality improvement, nitrogen fixation and green yield enhancement in peanut and soybean production, 7D pressed double-low rapeseed oil, and rapid detection equipment for genetically modified crops—were presented at the exhibition. Guanzhi Ou, Secretary of the CPC Hubei Provincial Committee, and Adong, First Secretary of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China, attended the forum and delivered speeches. More than 500 guests and youth representatives from over 120 countries participated in the event.
Plant-derived methyl selenium is produced using the dedicated rapeseed variety ‘Zhongyou Methyl Selenium No. 1’ as a biosynthetic platform, enabling rare nutritional elements to enter a new era of in-plant biosynthesis, industrialized production, and standardized manufacturing. This development opens up a novel pathway for the production of green organic selenium. The developed plant-derived methyl selenium tablets contain over 93% organic selenium, and a daily intake of 1 gram is sufficient to meet the internationally recommended anti-cancer dosage requirement.
The ARC bio-inoculant for peanut and soybean quality improvement, nitrogen fixation, and green yield enhancement addresses two globally challenging issues: toxin control with quality improvement and nitrogen fixation with yield increase. It has been demonstrated across more than 5 million mu in 22 provinces. The technology reduces aflatoxin contamination at the source by over 63%, while increasing soybean and peanut yields by an average of more than 15% and 19%, respectively, and enabling a 20%–40% reduction in nitrogen fertilizer application. The achievement was selected as a National Major Scientific and Technological Achievement in the agriculture sector at the 2025 Zhongguancun Forum.
A breakthrough was also achieved in green and efficient processing technologies for high-quality rapeseed oil production at origin. The developed 7D pressed rapeseed oil retains over 90% of key nutritional components such as vitamin E, phytosterols, and flavor-related compounds, compared with approximately 30% in conventional processes. Rich in bioactive polyphenols, the product features a strong nutty aroma and health-promoting properties. It was selected as a Major New Agricultural Technology in China in 2024.
In addition, the rapid detection equipment for genetically modified crops transforms traditional seed identification processes, which previously required specialized laboratory facilities, into an integrated ‘one-stop’ field-deployable testing system. The entire detection process takes only 30 minutes. The technology was selected as a 2025 National Agricultural ‘Spark’ Technology.
